The first Vanagon had some nice upgrades (wheels, dual headlight grille). And if you were going to get hit whilst driving Vanagon, getting hit in the rear is probably best (although I will admit that I totalled my ‘83 in a frontal offset collision and drove away even though the entire chassis was distorted). Better take out the engine than you...

I bet some “adventure wiring” was the culprit of that fire...

Not if I get it first! When was the last time you saw a Brasilia in the US that didn't come from Mattel?

I might make an exception for the Eurovan since it has a 5MT.

How many do you figure are even here? A dozen or so, maybe? I know more than one has been privately imported, but if you brought it to any decently sized air cooled event, chances are strong it would be the only one on the field.

I wouldn't even know how to figure that out, but a SWAG would be 1-1.5 dozen.

Probably. Looking at the engine I thought it was air-cooled, but I see a radiator out front. The fire damage burned a lot of pieces and parts making it a little tougher to identify.

And why is it in Utah? That’s not the place I think of when I think of hubs of unusual VW activity. Maybe someone donated it to charity after the owner passed away and they really had no clue how rare it is ; it seems that Copart sells off donated vehicles to help charities raise money.

That explain makes sense,  especially since I imagine charities taking cars for donations are looking to move them quickly and with minimal effort and that description is consistent with coparts..

For some reason I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube videos with people wandering around Copart lots, and I’ve learned a lot about their operations. It’s much like when I go to junkyards just to look around and take pictures, except now I don’t have to go out when it’s ungodly hot. In fact, I don’t even need to get out of bed...
